Fight 2 Win 92 Interview – Karla Shellhammer (Soul Fighters)

How long have you guys been married? Did you meet through BJJ?

Been married eight years and did not meet through BJJ. We met in Mexico and don’t remember much of how!

Who started first?

Jay was a purple belt when we met and I started less than three years ago after our son was born.

What’s it like training together?

Our schedules don’t really allow us to train together all the time, but when we share the mat we do drill and roll often.

How does impacting BJJ impact your home life?

It’s pretty hectic but it keeps our lifestyle focused and healthy, which we believe to be the best example for our kids, so even though it’s not easy we wouldn’t have it any other way.

What are your goals in BJJ?

Our goals are to continue challenging ourselves in competition, but more importantly to pass down our love for this sport and influence others to try it as a way to change their lives for the better.

You guys compete often. Is one of you driving the other or do you both just love getting out there?

Jay definitely had a big influence on me as a white belt and emphasizing the value of competing often. I also knew he wanted to do it for a while, but life and his career got in the way. Then, once he saw my fast progression, he took the same path and has been competing since, making it work with a full time job.

Is Denver the first time you guys will be on the same card? Either way, what’s that like?

Second time on the same card and it’s great. Especially coming to Denver and getting a chance to spend time together, doing something we love, it’s great bonding for a marriage.

Do you have similar games? Do you drill a lot at home with each other?

Everybody always tells me I’m like a mini Jay, but we think we definitely have our individual games, strengths and weaknesses. We drill a lot before big fights/tournaments and we have mats at home (which are mostly used by our daughter for gymnastics) but we are both big on drilling and we’ve definitely seen it pay off.

What do you think of your matchups?

Don’t know much about them, but we don’t typically focus on who we are competing against, more importantly in our game plans and what we’re trying to accomplish, win or lose.

Any message to the fans of Denver and those watching on stream?
